Sharon Van Etten // Thalia Hall, Feb. 14, 2019

I went to my first solo concert on Valentine’s Day, and never again will I question going to a concert by myself! I was worried I would feel awkward or stared at, but it was actually quite nice and there were definitely other people there by themselves too. Apparently going to concerts by yourself is a thing?? I saw Sharon Van Etten at Thalia Hall in Pilsen, and she was just a babe. She came out in a red velvet jumper/pant suit thing and it really worked for her.

She played a mix of her older soulful, folk-y stuff, and newer more upbeat rock jams. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but her new one, “Seventeen”, was great. I was also happy to see “Jupiter 4”, “Every Time the Sun Comes Up”, “One Day”, and “Your Shadow”.

Reggaeton

3

So a few weeks ago a friend of mine introduced me to Reggaeton and I literally can’t stop listening to it. He shared a playlist with me, which I’ve been playing on repeat ever since. Among the many catchy tunes on the playlist, this one is one of my favs. I have no idea what the lyrics are saying because I don’t know Spanish, so I may be unknowingly offending a lot of people right now. From the music video I can gather that a couple is having a fight, they go their separate ways for a bit, and then somehow run into each other on the street in the middle of a dance party and make up? Can  someone who speaks Spanish please tell me what’s going on?? I don’t know how I lived my life before discovering Reggaeton.

Lorde is a queen

0

I went to see Lorde in concert the other night in Chicago with some friends, and she was incredible. Even from far away up in the stands, we could feel her humility, genuine spirit, and wisdom. Her energy permeated the building. She spoke with such poise about what this album means to her and where it came from. As often happens at concerts, artists like to share a bit about what they’ve been through that influenced their music. And often these moments are inspiring. I think that warm, energized feeling elicited by these personal stories is magnified because it is connected to music and music always brings out all the feels (at least for me). If these stories weren’t told through music, they wouldn’t be nearly as powerful.

Lorde’s dynamism lies in her lyrics and her melodies of course, but also in her presence and performance. And her dance moves because they are just real and amazing. Her new album is a breakup album, so we cried, we laughed, and we danced. Because what else are you supposed to do in the face of heartbreak…

I like this performance of “Supercut”, because while it doesn’t show her explosive energy, it’s like a spiritual ode to an elusive memory of the past. Lucky for us, she sang this song at the concert and ran all over the stage in an happy/melancholic frenzy. It was definitely one of those experiences that I never wanted to end.

City girl

0

I remember listening to this song when I was in high school and college, dreaming of living in the big city one day. Now I’m here and I’m not as happy as I thought I would be back then. I thought I’d live in a beautiful apartment downtown, but I don’t think I knew much about money then. I thought life in the city was glamorous and always exciting. While sometimes true, not always true.

There are moments when do I love the city though. I had one of those moments the other night as I was walking downtown on Wacker Drive. The city at night is my favorite time in the city. It’s something about the lights. But the other night, as I was walking along the river, it was freezing and there were some snow flurries but I didn’t care because I was so caught up in taking the city in. It’s also not as crowded at night so you feel like you have the city more to yourself.

Ashley Stevenson – Slim Freedom

This girl mesmerizes crowds at L stations in Chicago. I have only ever seen her at the Washington blue line stop, but I think she plays at others as well. I’m always happy when I see her because her voice is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. I especially like her cover of Landslide. One can’t help but think of Tracy Chapman in comparison (a likening she may or may not be in favor of). She definitely makes waiting for the L more enjoyable. Her name is Ashley Stevenson and she goes by Slim Freedom. If you ever have the pleasure of seeing her while waiting for the L, you might want to skip your train and wait for the next one so you can listen a little longer, as I sometimes do 🙂

Ed Sheeran & Andrea Bocelli – “Perfect”

1

Having recently seen Andrea Bocelli in concert, I was so happy and surprised to come across this collaboration with Ed Sheeran on “Perfect.” I have a lot of respect for Andrea Bocelli and he was absolutely amazing in concert. What a powerful voice! And a fun little duo here with Ed Sheeran. I have a special place in my heart for Italian because I was born in Rome and lived there for the first few years of my life. Not that I don’t think the song is beautiful in English when Sheeran sings it, but it takes on a whole new dimensions when Bocelli opens his mouth and starts belting it in Italian. I have to say I’m impressed with Sheeran’s Italian though 🙂

The art of dancing

0

It’s no secret to those who know me that I don’t like dancing. For whatever reason it’s just never been something I’ve felt comfortable with or enjoyed. Perhaps the fact that my parents had no dancing at their wedding reception could explain it… (sounds like a boring reception). I randomly came across this girl on YouTube when I was looking for music videos of Despacito (definitely a guilty pleasure and yes I have looked up a translation of the lyrics) and I can’t stop watching her videos! She and her brother have a strong YouTube presence with millions of views and followers. I think this mashup is one of their best!

If only I had an older brother like this to teach me how to dance!

I know I’m obsessed, but just one more…

Ibexx – “Static”

1

I recently randomly came across this video by Ibexx through a friend in my Facebook newsfeed and I have had it stuck in my head ever since I first watched it! As far as I can tell, this is the only solo song she currently has out, but I CANNOT wait for more from where this came from. She is featured on “Uneven Ground” by Winnetka on the EP entitled This Place (which I also just randomly discovered by looking this girl up and recommend you check out). Her voice is angelic and soothing, and I love the way this beat and melody work together. Not to mention the interesting artistic direction of the video…let’s hope there’s more coming our way!

Obsessed

I’m currently obsessed with this song! I think it’s absolutely infectious.
